Image via WikipediaThis has caused a big stir in the media in the last few days. This “pregnancy Belt” is a new invention by Corey Menscher who is about to be a new dadnd was feeling left out of the baby’s kicking.
How this works
It is a belt that the mum wears and the belt uses sensors to tack the foetus then sends wirelss signal toa computer with messages such as “I kicked Mummy at 11.25am.” This is picked up wirelessly and sent to Twitter the micoblogging service. (Aside: From twitter it is actually very easy to then broadcast it to many other social media sites like Facebook as there are many tools that integrate these services) His intention is that this creates a log which can then be exported to another application like a graphing solution.
Corey says on his blog that he is shocked by the amount of interest in this device as he said he “really created Kickbee for our own use, and never thought people would react so strongly. It’s been fun, and I look forward to continue tweaking its accuracy, and making it look a bit more “friendly”.
It’s also important to note that there is a practical medical application, in that mothers are told to monitor a baby’s activity in the womb, as low activity can indicate fetal distress.
In the UK, the private PortlandHospital has started a £120 scanning service where expectant mums can download a 3D image of babies to MP3 players.
This is still a graduate school concept but it will be made publicly avauilable soon. Sign up to the newsletter to get the latest news.
